Prior's Court School, Newbury, Berkshire

Architecture, Education

Prior's Court School is a specialist facility inspired by the Higashi School in Boston, which embraces an educational model developed in Tokyo, for teaching autistic children with 'Daily Life Therapy'. It was the vision of Dame Stephanie Shirley, an entrepreneur, to create a beacon school for children with autism. The school is a pioneering facility which provides specialist care, residential accommodation and respite for children with special needs.

The principal School building is a 17th / 18th Century Grade II Listed Mansion House which was refurbished and modernised with the lower floors fulfilling the administration facilities for the running of the School and the upper floors used as dormitories.

New buildings were introduced to create functional residential accommodation for the older students. Other buildings were converted to provide sensory facilities including an indoor swimming pool and sports hall.

This £14m project was fast tracked and we achieved completion within a single year.
