Fermat Centre, Maths classrooms, Surrey

Architecture, Education

We prepared concept designs and acted as Project Manager for this School project for the construction of a new 6 Classroom Maths Block using a highly sustainable and thermally efficient Carbon Neutral Straw Bale Building System which is the first successfully completed ModCell System Building used in Schools, opened March 2011.

The external walls of the building are constructed of straw bales coated in a natural lime render and timber larch cladding which provides an excellent thermal envelope that requires very little energy to heat and run. The classrooms are light and airy and have been well received by the pupils as an inspiring building to learn in.

The building programme took 8 months to complete from concept design to occupation which completed on time and on budget at £950,000.
