Christs Hospital School, Horsham once again played host to the annual SHW Football match which saw the curtain fall on SHW's sporting calendar for the year - and once again, it was a match played with high intensity and passion.

Football team in bibs

Teams were picked in classic playground 'Numbers' fashion and after a warm up that can best be described as 'energy saving', we were in a position to kick off.

With decent early exchanges at both ends of the pitch and some seasoned tackles in the centre of the park, the precedent had been set early on for how this game was going to unfold.

The deadlock was finally broken after 15 minutes with a neatly worked team goal from bibs. Some fancy passing and moving, carving apart non-bib's defence like Christmas Turkey and Tom Freeman was on hand to apply a tidy finish in the corner. 7 minutes later Matt Morris made it 2-0 to Bibs, claiming an assist for himself, but teeing up his weaker left foot with his right and slotting it past the keeper.

Andy O'Driscoll pulled one back for Non-Bibs with a bullet header just before the travelling army of supporter, Lily Rigley blew the imaginary whistle for half time.

After a brief refreshment break, both teams returned to pitch for another 30 minutes of high calibre football.

Shortly into the second half the ever-reliable Harry Speed levelled the match at 2-2, assisted by a piece of sloppy defending by Duncan Bannister. However, Jamie Scott was on hand moments later to spare his blushes, rifling a volley in to the top corner from some 15 yards.

A tidy solo effort and well constructed team goal saw Harry Beyer net himself a brace for Bibs , either side of Harry Speed securing his second from the spot following a dubious penalty award.

The match ended 5-3 to Bibs.

This year saw some very impressive debut performances for both teams, with special mentions going to;

  • Jamil Hornsby-Odi who displayed some very tidy footwork in the centre of the park
  • Jamie Scott for this thunderous volley into the top corner to restore Bibs lead
  • Andy O'Driscoll for his bullet header, reminiscent of Andy Linighan's 1993 FA Cup Final goal against Sheffield Wednesday.

Organiser Duncan Bannister said: "Many thanks to all those who attended in what was a well balanced and well fought match. All had a great time playing football and at the pub afterwards raising £110 for our good causes in the process. I'd thoroughly recommend participating in the great SHW Summer of Sport, an opportunity not available with many companies."
