SHW - Decarbonisation Project - Horsham

ESG & Sustainability

SHW’s Sustainability Team prepared a comprehensive decarbonisation report number of flats in Horsham owned by Horsham District Council. The report was designed to assess the existing carbon emissions of the properties and outline low carbon technologies and strategies for reducing those emissions in line with Horsham District Council’s Carbon Reduction Plan. The process involved reviewing energy usage and recommending improvements such as upgrading heating systems, enhancing insulation, and incorporating renewable energy sources. The overarching aim was to provide actionable steps to support the achievement of net zero objectives and reinforce environmental responsibility.

Schedule of Condition

Following the decarbonisation report, Paul Armstrong, representing SHW’s Building Consultancy team, completed an internal and external schedule of condition for the dwellings.

A schedule of condition is a document that captures the state of a property at a specific moment, typically before the commencement of works or the start of a lease. It includes detailed descriptions and photographic evidence of defects and notable features, serving as an impartial record for future reference and comparison.

Next Steps and Collaboration

At this stage, SHW has been commissioned to carry out a measured survey of the dwellings. A measured survey involves taking detailed and accurate measurements of the property’s structure and layout, typically producing scale drawings that serve as a basis for future works or planning. Alongside this, the team is collaborating with an external consultant to produce a report exploring the conversion of the existing gas central heating systems to electric alternatives. This work is intended to help the client advance towards their net zero targets.

The project highlights the effective cooperation between SHW’s various departments, all working together to fulfil the client’s sustainability requirements and contribute to UK’s ultimate goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
